Saturday-Sunday February 5-6 A highlight of the entire trip for many was a trip we took Saturday and Sunday 700km north to the ancient town of Lalibela. In the dry desert mountains at over 7000 ft, Lalibela is an amazing sacred place with 11 churches that were carved out of rock in the 14th century. Every church has it's own orthodox priest. Since it was Sunday morning, we were there with all the regular worshippers from the town of Lalibela. They come with their heads covered in white and it is something to behold. What if everyone attending MPPC showed up covered in white? People in Lalibela live much the same way they have for the last 400 years. The only difference is they have tourists from "outer space," which is what we felt like. The older children were very good at engaging us and befriending us and giving us crosses to wear around our neck, then asking for money to buy school books before we left.
