To write about the experiences on the first days of a trip like this means to relate stories of anticipation and travel. The weeks leading up to take off were hectic – filled with last-minute planning, tasks, items to pick up, packing and general mayhem, adrenaline, anticipation, together with a large dose of wild excitement from the sense of impending adventure. Even in the midst of all that, God kept showing up in various ways to various team members. First, there were the family members and friends providing special wishes or writing notes to team members to open each day on the trip. Two members of the team experienced a closeness with family around the memory of a beloved grandmother and her faith journey. Then, there was the Ethiopian coffee barista at a US airport the week before we left. In short, God kept reminding us that, having said “yes” to Him, he will be with us each step of the way during this trip. As one friend said in her take-off note to some team members, “God’s got your back.” The details all started to feel like they would come together. A peace settled in over the team.
