This year's teams will be working with two missionaries. Week 1 team will work with Amanda Gutierrez at El Salero, a Christian Sports Center, just outside the capitol city of Managua. Amanda and her partners, Kathy and Halle August purchased 5 acres and have partnered with teams like ours to build a safe and healthy place for young people to play and grow in their faith. We will be doing some construction, holding workshops for adults and helping Amanda with clothing sales. (from the clothes that many of you sent with us.) We will also be putting together the backpacks for delivery to the recipients of the school scholarships, a program started by St. Paul's 3 years ago. We look forward to delivering these backpacks to some of the remote villages and experiencing the joy of the children as they receive their school supplies and uniforms.
The second week medical team will hold 5 days of medical clinics, 3 of them at an orphanage in Jinotega built by our host missionary, Sandy Carter. Jinotega, a rural and mountainous region about 4 hours northeast of Managua, is home to many who do not have access to health care. Mid week we will return to Los Cedros, the site of Sandy's new infant orphanage just outside of Managua. For two days we will do some work at the orphanage and hold clinics in the communities nearby. We may again hold a clinic inside the Managua dump where approximately 2000 families live. At each clinic site, as well as at the orphanage, the education team, assisted by others when they are available, will do crafts, stories, skits and games with the children.
We are supported by your prayers and go in the knowledge that "God has his hand all over this trip," in the words of a "pray-er." Please continue to pray for Amanda and Sandy as their work continues year round.
(We will attempt to update this site daily during the first week. Week 2 we will have limited internet access and so we may only be able to post pictures after our return to State College.)
